City of Denver seeking the best in projects that elevate the public realm

DENVER — The Denver Community Planning and Development department is seeking nominations for the annual Mayor’s Design Awards. The Mayor’s Design Awards honor projects throughout the city for excellence in architecture, design and place-making. The awards are presented to Denver homeowners, business owners, nonprofits, artists and others for their contribution to the public realm through innovative design projects.

There are many different types of projects that may be eligible. Examples include, but are not limited to:

•          Newly-built structures (may include private residences)

•          Creatively renovated or refurbished buildings

•          Historic preservation projects

•          Outdoor spaces or landscapes such as small plazas or parks

•          Public spaces on private property, such as promenades, courtyards or sidewalk cafés

•          Special events that create a sense of place or create community identity

Mayor Michael B. Hancock will review the nominations, select the winners and present the awards in the fall.

“Award-winning projects honor the things Denverites hold dear,” Mayor Hancock said. “We cherish our gathering places, the spots that draw us together and define us. This is a chance to honor Denver’s very best in architecture, design and events.”

Nominations are due September 1, 2013. To nominate a project for the Mayor’s Design Awards and view past winners, please visit DenverGov.org/MDA.

Speaking of design, whom should I contact about getting a green-grocer into LoDo? The area from Writers Square to the Millennium Bridge is devoid of that service. A few less restaurants and a few more tiny markets ala NYC would make my little LoDo world complete.

Keep up the great work. I really appreciate the updates.
